Matchsticks from Natural Fibre

Utility / Light Enginnering

Shri U.S. Patil
City: Nandurbar
State: Maharastra
Description:

The innovator has ingeniously developed matchsticks using natural fibers and a natural binding material.

Natural fibers are put in order to form a thread like structure. These structures are passed through an indigenously prepared paste mainly and kept for half and hour and heated for 10-15 minutes to become starch to act as the binding agent..

The paste helps in achieving the strength and binding for the matchstick to retain its straight length. The thread is passed through the starch solution. The starched thread is wound over a cylindrical drum with wooden slabs of width of the matchstick and length along the curved surface of the drum. These planks are provided with slots to cut the threads at uniform lengths. After cutting the threads they are dipped into the phosphorus solution to coat the tips with the igniting material.

Salient features:
  • Ignites like a wooden matchstick but burns longer than conventional matchstick.
  • Cost for manufacturing a matchbox full of matchsticks will be appoxin fifteen paise and can be sold at 25 paise per box. Other matchboxes are sold as 50 paise per box.
  • Uses waste to manufacture matchstick, and no harmful chemical is used except the mandatory phosphorus
